About the University 

The Saimaa University of Applied Sciences is an institute of higher education in Southeastern Finland in the cities of Lappeenranta and Imatra. We offer degrees in five fields. In five degree programmes, all education is conducted in English. We have about 3000 students, 200 of them being international degree students.

 The Team
Marko Raitanen is a Senior lecturer specialising insocial gerontology and in elderly care. He joined SUAS in 2012 from Socom (South-East Finland Social and Welfare Centre of Expertise) where he worked on national development and support networks contributing to the municipalities basic operation of the development in social work for the aged.

Sari Kokkonen is a Master of Health Science, specialising in gerontology and public health. She is a senior lecturer in elderly care with a pedagogical qualification. Since 2011 Sari has been the lecturer in charge at SUAS of nurses and practical nurses who are specialising in memory disorders and dementia. She has a great deal of experience in the care of older people and she has worked for over 12 years with clients who have dementia or different kinds of cognitive impairment. She has also made strong connections to local health care systems in elderly care.

Tiina Väänänen holds a Master’s of Health Science, specialising in management and gerontology. She also has a pedagogical qualification. She has been project manager in online teaching for over a year. Tiina worked as a nurse with patients who had dementia for over 7 years and she has been a senior lecturer in SUAS since autumn 2012. Before this she worked for over 5 years as a lecturer in adult education, specialising in nursing care of older people. She is also a member of the Dementia Association in South-Karelia.
